Christchurch Botanic Gardens Design Competition (2008)

We were placed in the top five design teams for two different design proposals, one completed in collaboration with Warren and Mahoney  and another entry with Wilson & Hill Architects.

The competition involved the design of a new Staff and Visitor Facility at the site of the current Botanic Gardens nursery, assessment of the existing site and identification of buildings that could be incorporated into the design and an assessment of circulation patterns.

Both landscape proposals sought to create a strong arrival sequence for the visitor to the Botanic Gardens through the weaving of gathering space with an abstraction of former vegetation communities. Plant species chosen reflected former vegetation typologies of the site.  Green elements proposed for the buildings were to extend out into the landscape to help blur  the lines of landscape and building. Both of the proposals were quite different in their form and final resolution, however the landscape strategies for both shared similar philosophies.

South Island Landscape Design Competition (2004)

In 2004 we won Gold for the ‘Where does our water go’ installation. The design depicted water usage in Christchurch on a typical day. Informative billboards had on one side and an image conveying water usage and the amount on the other. A more physical expression of this was the 120 x 9.6 litre plastic buckets of water on the lawn, the amount required to sustain a lawn of the size constructed for a week during summer.

Juxtaposed with the water usage examples in the design are rain harvesting methods and examples of smart thinking – a rain garden of rushes welcomes water from the canopy’s sloping roof, the use of laserlite visually reinforcing the passage of this water, gobi blocks allow ground penetration of falling rain.
