Harlequin Public House (HPH)

This landmark heritage villa (c. 1899) in central Christchurch was fully restored following the 2010-11 earthquakes. It now houses the elegant bistro of renowned chef Jonny Schwass.

r+m created outdoor spaces for varied dining experiences. Their design incorporated an expansive deck surrounded by a bespoke, ironwork balustrade. The vista is punctuated by glimpses of a dynamic city intersection while a mix of exotic, edible and native planting provides screening from traffic.

The car park was partly greened and features an edible garden, supplying the restaurant with fresh herbs, seasonal fruit and vegetables.

r+m worked alongside the owners and tenants to develop a landscape design sympathetic to the era of the house while incorporating a modern twist.
