r+m's design closely balances the functional requirements of a supermarket with the pre-existing ecological values of the Southbrook stream that runs through the site.
The Southbrook Pak'nSave project presented r+m with an additional opportunity to work with Foodstuffs South Island Ltd and to balance a multitude of site requirements to achieve a well-articulated landscape outcome.
In combination with walkways, cantilevered decks, and stream corridor seating allows for public activity, and extensive use of indigenous vegetation across the site sets new standards for supermarket development.
At the heart of r+m's design was the realignment of the Southbrook stream, and the aquatic values of the stream were retained in collaboration with ecologist Mark Taylor.
