Project West Wind is a 62 turbine wind farm near Makara, west of Wellington city.
In 2005 r+m was engaged by Meridian Energy to conduct a landscape and visual assessment of the effects of the proposed wind farm. r+m’s evidence was presented at Council and Environment Court hearings.
Key considerations included how the wind farm might affect the natural character of the coastal environment and any outstanding natural features south-west of the Wellington district.
Other important issues included how the wind farm might affect amenity values; specifically, the natural or physical qualities and characteristics of an area that contributes to people’s appreciation of its beauty and aesthetic coherence.
The wind farm was the winner of the Energy and Resources category in the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards 2012.
The 62 turbine wind farm is now operational and the West Wind Recreation Area is open to the public. Public access includes walking and mountain bike tracks.
