Project West Wind is a 62 turbine wind farm near Makara, west of the city of Wellington.
In 2005, Meridian Energy committed r+m to conduct a landscape and visual evaluation of the proposed wind farm's effects. r+m's evidence was submitted at the hearings of the Council and the Environment Court.
Key considerations included how the wind farm could affect the coastal environment's natural character and any outstanding natural features southwest of the Wellington district.
Other important issues included how the wind farm could affect the value of amenities; in particular, the natural or physical qualities and characteristics of the area highly appreciated for its beauty and natural aesthetics.
The wind farm won the 2012 New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards in the Energy and Resources category.
